Everyone wants a straight and beautiful smile, but many people are wary about committing to orthodontic treatments that involve a list of dietary restrictions and irremovable metal parts that are quite conspicuous. Thankfully, Invisalign has allowed many patients to realign their smiles with removable and virtually invisible clear aligners. If you’re curious about what it’s like to wear Invisalign, here’s a list of frequently asked questions about the process as well as their answers.

Does Wearing Invisalign Hurt?

While you may experience some slight discomfort when you start wearing a new set of aligners, it will take the form of a sense of tightness around your teeth rather than the ache that comes with traditional braces. This tightness will diminish as you get used to wearing them and may be unnoticeable after a few hours, and it can be addressed with an over-the-counter pain reliever. You may also develop sore spots on your cheeks and gums as they get used to the presence of your clear aligners. Once the first week is over, you should not be experiencing much more soreness.

How Much Do I Have to Wear My Invisalign Trays?

When it comes to how many hours you need to wear your Invisalign trays every day, the general rule is the more, the better. Orthodontists recommend wearing them for at least twenty to twenty-two hours daily, but you will ideally wear them at all times other than during meals or oral hygiene sessions. This will prevent delays in your treatment that can result from your teeth sliding out of place when you aren’t wearing your aligners.

How Long Do Invisalign Treatments Take?

Invisalign treatments last twelve months on average, but they can take anywhere from six to eighteen months depending on the severity of the patient’s case. For example, a patient who only needs to correct a gap between their front teeth may need less than a year with Invisalign, but someone with severely crooked teeth may require more time.

The best ways to ensure that your Invisalign treatment goes as smoothly and briefly as possible include practicing excellent oral hygiene, wearing your aligners as instructed, and avoiding loss of or damage to your aligners, as needing to replace them can delay your treatment.

Invisalign may be an easier, more comfortable, and more discrete way to straighten your teeth. Consulting with your dentist can determine if Invisalign can be a great orthodontic treatment for you.
