Whether it’s pants, shoes, or a pair of dentures, when something doesn’t fit well, it can be very uncomfortable. But unlike clothing, ill-fitting dentures aren’t just a nuisance, they can cause dangerous problems to your oral health. Don’t suffer through unnecessary discomfort. Here are a few important reasons why properly fitting dentures are essential.

Chafing

When your dentures don’t fit right, it can cause them to chafe and hurt your gums. This can result in swelling, tenderness, and even painful sores that can eventually become infected. Thus, if your dentures stop fitting properly, it is best to see your dentist as soon as possible to prevent further injury.

Soreness

Ill fitting dentures can cause jaw pain, too. This can make it difficult to chew and speak and can even hurt your ears or cause a headache. Eventually, it may even lead to a temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD).

Speech Difficulties

Another negative side-effect of poorly fitting dentures is difficulty speaking properly. Ensuring a correct fit allows you to communicate effectively without embarrassment.

Slipping / Shifting

If your dentures don’t fit right, they can easily fall out while you are speaking or chewing, even if you use denture adhesive.

Malnutrition

Malnutrition is a dangerous condition that can occur when you are unable to eat a variety of healthy foods. When you are unable to chew your food properly, you are more likely to avoid certain healthy options such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, and even some meats. If you notice your dentures are no longer allowing you to consume a balanced diet, it’s important to see your dentist at once for help.

Angular Cheilitis

Angular cheilitis is an overgrowth of yeast caused by excess saliva. This can occur when your teeth or dentures are not properly aligned. Not only does it cause embarrassing red streaks at the corners of your mouth, but this condition is also painful and itchy to boot.

Tooth Damage

If you have any remaining natural teeth, poorly fitting dentures can easily slip and cause damage, possibly resulting in more lost teeth down the road.

Remember, your dentures should fit securely in your mouth and should not cause any pain or discomfort. If you notice any changes in how they look or feel, schedule an appointment with your dentist at once.
